A student of the TUSUR Faculty of Computer Systems received a scholarship of the Acoustical Society of America.

Evgeny Schipunov was among 15 winners selected throughout Russia. They come from universities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Taganrog etc. Evgeny is the only student from Tomsk in this exclusive list. The winners will receive their grant certificates in Moscow during the June session of the Russian Acoustical Society.

The fifth-year student Evgeny Schipunov submitted for the competition his project entitled «Comparative Analysis of Phonetic Range in Different Languages». He is working on this project under the supervision of Roman v. Mescheryakov, associate professor of the Department of Complex Information Security of Computer Systems. Evgeny studies specific features of pronunciation in different languages, such as Russian, English, French, and Arabic, using the model of human auditory system, in order to develop algorithms and software to be applied in treatment of people with various speech organ disorders.

This field has been developed by researchers of the Department of Complex Information Security of Computer Systems in cooperation with the Research Institute of Oncology (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences) for the last 10 years. This year R&D results of TUSUR, including Evgeny’s work, will be used in the joint Russian-French project involving researchers, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students of TUSUR and University of Limoges.

The ASA International Student Grant is awarded for research and development in the field of acoustics. In 2006 another TUSUR student Evgeny Kostyuchenko was given this prestigious grant.
