The Level Keeps Growing Higher: RoboCup Russia 2023 Championship Closes in Tomsk

May 23, 2023

On May 14, the RoboCup Russia 2023 competition held its closing ceremony at the Integratsiya school.

165 teams have come to Tomsk from all over Russia and Belarus to demonstrate their skill in programming for robot soccer, rescue and stage performance.

“RoboCup is a competition rooted in science and technology, its primary objective is to share knowledge and promote technological advancement. Its core idea is that victory or loss are secondary to how much you can learn while competing,” says Vice Chairman of RoboCup 2023, Executive Secretary of the Russian National RoboCup Committee Evgeny Shandarov.

In order to qualify for the RoboCup Final in Tomsk, competing teams had to finish first in their respective regional qualification rounds, or to be selected by the Organizing Committee directly. This year, qualification rounds were organized in 14 regions, three of them joined the championship for the first time. The final lineup of competing teams represented a total of 16 regions of Russia and Belarus: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Kemerovo, Perm, Novosibirsk, Murmansk, Kaliningrad, Taganrog, Vladivostok, Ekaterinburg, Kazan, Tyumen, Nizhny Novgorod, Minsk, Gomel.

Member of the Organizing Committee, Head of the Robotics Center at 239 Presidential Physics and Mathematics Lyceum in Saint Petersburg Sergey Filippov says that every year the Committee observes qualitative growth of competing teams. “RoboCup encourages participants to share their best work. It is expected that last year’s winner would publish their ideas, and that next year’s teams would be building upon that excellence, and so the level of the entire championship keeps growing higher. My advice to every competitor is to never be satisfied with their achievements; you complete the task, test your work, and whether it is a success or not, you collect your thoughts, draw conclusions and keep moving forward.”

RoboCup is a non-profit project for the promotion of AI, robotics and associated fields of science and technology carried out in the form of robotics competitions. The first RoboCup competition in Russia was held in 2016 in Tomsk.
