The Russian team ATOM has been named winner in the AgriBot challenge at the TechnoXian World Robotics Championship. Yegor Shishko, a student of TUSUR University and member of the team has returned to Tomsk with his gold medal.
“We competed in the AgriBot challenge,” says Yegor Shishko. “The challenge took place on a field with two apple trees where teams competed by picking apples using their robots. In this timed challenge, the more apples you collect, the higher your score. The robot is a H-frame with Mecanum wheels that rotate in any direction, and it is installed with two encoders designed by me. The encoders allowed the robot to move smoothly and register its location in the field and communicate it to the operator. The robot picked apples using a grip and an arm that was extendable by 1.5 meters.”
Both apples and containers were colored either green or red. The fruit had to be collected and placed in containers in accordance with their color. The AgriBot challenge is meant to support automation of agriculture, and competing teams are scored based on the design of their robot, its ability to identify objects, its accuracy, autonomy and real-time decision making.
Yegor is a second-year student at the Faculty of Innovations pursuing a program in Mechatronics and Robotics. He came to Tomsk from Saratov and has been a member of a robotics club since high school.
“I chose TUSUR because it offered a degree program that I wanted to study, and because I like it when it’s cold. After graduation, I would like to work for some design bureau, maybe something in machine building. I love the process of design. Also when I’m older, I would like to mentor a student robotics team in competitions like this one,” says Yegor.
